loose shifter

a year ago a crooked tranny tech switched out my transmission during a road trip. ever since, the shifter has been loose, and i finally have some free time to burn.

the shifter shifts fine, but has some side-to-side play that was not there before the tranny switch. for example: put the car in first, and the shifter would normally be stiffly held in one spot. in my car, however, there is about an inch or more of side to side play (no resistance). i do not think the transmission is the problem, and the extension bar is solid. its hard to tell where the slop is coming from, because i cant wiggle the shifter and be under the car at the same time. however, i did have a friend jiggle it around a bit, and the only obvious slop seems to be in the joint at the front of the shift control rod just before the rod enters the rubber boot at the transmission.

this joint is held together with a 12mm nut that is pretty seized on. i wanted to take it apart and see if i could add a washer or otherwise shim something to take up the slop, but dont want to risk breaking an otherwise functional setup.

it would be nice to have a tight pattern again.

does anyone know how this joint works? if i broke the bolt or nut, would it be replaceable with hardware store parts, or should i let sleeping dogs lie?

those parts are pretty much impossible to get from wrecking yards because they always take the wheels off and drop the cars so there's no access.

well there at that bolt and up at the shifter there are bushings you can replace those to see if that will do it. it didnt on mine, when I got a tranny replaced that happened too, and my friend thought it might be the synchros in the tranny that was put in. but I tried putting in a B&M short shift, new bushings, and putting in the short shifter I pushed too hard and broke the part that holds the shifter in the car and had to replace that, so I reaplced almost every single part that has to do with shiftings outside the tranny and it didn fix it so....you do the math

It's up to you.
