Occasionally the engine starts to race out of control. I first noticed the problem driving on the interstate for 100 miles...as I slowed down for a toll booth, the engine started to race. The idler seems to get stuck every now and then. I have had it cleaned out several times. I'm wondering if it's the idler or something else????

Ha. I've seen this on may cars, even my own. The your throttle cable is streched with time and needs to be adjusted. There should be another spot on the pully for this exact reason. You may have to play with your tention after but it not hard to do.
The warmth of the engine bay expands the wire and causes it to ride up on the side of the cable pully. If it happens again (as crazy as it sounds) play with your gas pedel. Or better yet see if you can pull over shut off the engine and take a look for your self.
