clutch frozen to pressure plate

I just bought a blazer but my clutch problem is in my 76 Pontiac Firebird (but generic I'm sure). the bird was sitting for a long time and now the clutch will not disengage. I see the pedal is pushing the clutch fork lever (sticking outside the housing) so I'm sure the throwout bearing is moving the pressure plate springs. I think the clutch plate rusted/froze onto the pressure plate.
I tried starting in gear (with the clutch pedal depressed) to break it free but the vehicle just lurged ahead. I'm thinking of starting it with rear wheels off ground and then hitting the breaks & clutch at the same time.
am I missing something?? :confused:

But just off the cuff? Sounds to me that your yoke's broken off the fork somehow and your pressure plate's fingers are still binding the clutch pack to the flywheel face. *shrug* Never had to work on any vehicle of my own that had a manual clutch... they worked for a lifetime for me. ;)

Isn't there an inspection cover at the bottom of the bell housing? You might be able to use mirrors and flashlights to see up inside to get a better idea of what's really going on.
Shooting from the hip, I'd say wolfox is probably right, but look to see if the pivot ball that the fork pivots on isn't broken off and thus preventing the fork from fully disengaging the pressure plate.
