I am looking at many different air intake kits. I was wondering if anyone bought one that actually made a big difference on their blazer. I have a 4.3L engine. Please vote or tell me your opinions.

I ghettoed one together using the existing parts on my truck. She seems to be a bit more responsive and has given a small boost to MPG. I am still collecting data over a month's time of so to make certain of a few things. I am going on a roadtrip, some 400+ miles round-trip in a few hours. I will see what's going on for certain over a long, lazy 70 MPH jaunt up to Kansas City.

How did you make it? What parts did you use?

Ebay intake will give you the SAME increase and save you 150-200 bucks over the name branded variety.

Hey wolfox I read in your post about where you reset your computer after your air intake mod. The intake I bought from ebay didn't mention this and I never pulled the fuses. I have noticed better throttle response but only slight mileage increase.( maybe from using better throttle response more often?) My question is; If you don't reset the computer will It learn the new fuel mix on it's own over time? Thanks.

Are there any tests to prove this? Thanks.

Bro, its a tube and a cotton gauze filter.

The name on the side will not net you any difference in performance.

Do the no names have the larger diameter "hat" right above the throttle body? If not then it's not the same. K&N's were designed based on dynamometer testing. The knock offs may flow as good as the K&N and a side by side test would determine this. Without actual tests it's just speculation.

It doesn't matter how big the hat is.

If it is larger than the throttle bore size, it is good enough.

I bought an ebay kit.....$40 and I cant use it because the rubber collars that came with it dont fit. They are too small :(

Never was in a big rush to rectify that though. Sorry I am of no help here.

You do know they are probably not going to slip right on perfectly, they are rubber and will stretch over the fittings.

yeah, there is rubber that will stretch a little....and rubber that wont go on unless you heat it up a lot and freeze the throttle intake piece in some Liquid O2. I got the latter

Used everything it came with - took alot more away and chopped stuff out than added in all reality.

Yeah, it will eventually learn. Either way, it takes about 250 miles to figure out what's going on and stabilize. Resetting it after you're done though forces it to learn some things much faster, like idling, idling under load (Lights on, wipers going and A/C turned up full blast - hey sometimes we get caught in muggy hurricanes) and the like. Resting your foot on the brake and letting it idle with no accessories on at first, and in drive for two minutes pretty much sets it's idle curves right away. It will take some spirited driving and a mix of highway/side street driving for it to figure it all out. At first though, she'll move pretty quick with just a stab on the gas. Then she'll adjust and mellow out a little. The wheel burning launches will still be there, but you have to snap the throttle open from a start for it to go "Okay, we're moving!" Have fun. :)

go with K&N FIPK. i got mine on completeexhaust.com for $200. on K&N's website they show dyno run of 4.3cpi with fipk and show 7whp increase.

not worth it though.

You will see the same performance out of the ebay kits for 40 bucks.

[COLOR=darkred]Everyone that I've ever talked to about the 'whole' cold air intake kits, has said it uses more gas and gives a very little noticeable increase in power. You guys have obviously used it on a 4.3L though. Is it worth the $40, $200, or $400? Is It hard to install the FIPK kit? Do I ask too many questions?

BlazerLT

Your friends are wrong, it uses more gas because people tend to like to open throttle it a lot more with the intake on.

Upgrade your muffler before you install an intake.

You need to get rid of the exhaust better before you allow the engine to intake more air.

It is really not worth 200 when you can get the ebay kits for 440 which are practically identical performance wise.

I have the K & N filter in my air box now, but I believe when I upgrade I will install one off of ebay. It is all the same, you are only paying for the name. As far as power and mileage, I can definitely tell that the truck runs smoother, never noticed mileage or power though.

Thanks LT! To be completely honest with you, I have been looking at a lot of engine upgrades and I was about to go out and get an Intake kit before exhaust. I heard a lot about this muffler from Middas (from you guys). Does it top a MagnaFlow? I like the MagnaFlow because it has that quiet but "I still got balls" sound. Again, I'm not after sound. I want Performance.

You want a straight through design bro.

No defectors in the muffler.

so EXACTLY how much does the intake shrink when you dunk it in your liquid O2? OMG like you could even see the diff.

Are you the pres. of the liar's club?

I would have to agree with BlazerLT as far as the air intake. Sure, k&n is known for performance and reliability but it's just wire and cotton. I have recently installed a cold air intake on my 98 (that i got off ebay for $48) and i love it. I have noticed better throttle response and an average increase in gas mileage of about 2 mpg.
