Singing Timing Belt

Hey everyone, I need help with this one. I have a 94 Accord EX (F22B1) Ever since I had my timing belt changed back in January at about 167,000 miles. I noticed my engine was makin a high pitch squealing sound. I listened to it closely and it is coming from the timing belt. Plus it started happening right after I got it changed. I took it back and they looked at it and adjusted the timing belt cover. It made it a little quieter but its still there. They told me they dont know what it is but that it could possibly be the timing belt cover being warped and rubbing against the belt. I notice it mostly when the engine is warmed up since everything else is quiter at that point and that squealing noise sticks out most then. I know its not the tensioner because it wasnt making that noise before I got the belt changed. This is my 2nd timing belt change. I was told it could be the belt being too tight but they told me its not that. Another thing I am wondering is can this be the wrong belt? like the non V-TEC belt on a V-TEC? Any advice is appreciated, THANKS.

They will whine when overtight, but you say that's been eliminated. Did they try starting it with the cover off? That's what I'd do. And you can't rule out the tensioner just because it was OK before replacement. The old belt might not have been putting the same amount of stress on it, or they might have damaged it by overtightening.

I dont think they did. I'll have it checked out, THANKS. The crankshaft pulley has to be taken off to get the lower timing belt cover off huh?

Probably. Even taking the top off, and loosening the bottom might answer the question. Then you might be able to put some force on the tensioner, and see if it changes the sound, if it's still there with the cover released.

On that motor, does the tensioner run on the cog side, or the flat side of the belt? It's been a long time, I don't remember. Flatside tensioners are more likely to make whistling or screeching if misaligned or tensioned wrong.

Cog side tensioners will usually rattle when bad, and howl like a supercharger when overtightened.

Thanks for the info jeff. Im going to have it checked out again. Yeah my tensioner is on the flat side of the belt. Yeah i see what ur sayin. one thing i was wondering is do you think there is any possible way it could be the wrong belt? like the non V-TEC belt on my V-TEC? i looked at the 2 belts but i couldnt notice a visible difference but they both have different part #'s. so im guessin they are different some how?

I don't really know. I guess if there's a difference in width or tooth size/shape, that'd make it noisy.

The part number on belts usually includes some info about its size. Are the part numbers similar?

Yeah thats what i am thinkin can be a possibility. im not sure. i am pretty sure the genuine honda belts have a part number on them but i cant see it cuz the cover is still on. i am going to ask a mechanic about it and see what he says. i still have the old belt to match up part #'s if there is any on the belt.
