hey guys, i posted a while back about how i blew my valve seals, and that the only problem i'm getting really is burning oil at high rpms (more than 1 quart per month), and sometimes i get a little stuttering at real high rpms... now that could be more than just my valve seals but i'm not positive. In order to replace my valve seals i am going to have to take my head off, and just recently a friend's friend is selling a rebuilt - ported and all that good stuff gsr head, for cheap. I dont know concrete details yet but, im not sure if it has any valvetrain upgrades or not... all i know is its rebuilt, ported, and the guy wants to get rid of it for around 300. what would you do if you were in my position, buy the new gsr head, or just replace the valve seals on my current head, which could have more problems than just that valve seals.... thanks for any input

If you're going to spend $300 on a head, just have yours rebuilt.

I wouldn't spend $300 on head.
That's expensive, I'd stick to doing all my own porting by hand.
Oh... nevermind.:p

well the only thing is i dont know what else is done to it besides porting, im going to find out probably tommorow, i could get mine ported for like 200, but if this one has valvetrain upgrades, it would cost me about the same to do mine, and i wouldnt have to be out of a car for probably more than a week. if i buy the new head, then ill be out of a car for max 2 days... thanks for input

Is your car already a GSR?
If not, i'd go for it.
If it is, it's ported... and ready to go... $300 sounds pretty cheap for a ported head. I'd personally highly consider it.

Yeah but you still dont know what you're getting, i would still at least take it to a machine shop and have them check it for cracks or to see if it's leaking from the valve seats. But i personally would do all the head work myself because i dont trust anybody else...

Have a machine shop check the head before you buy it. Ask about upgrades. Offer $250. You can still sell yours for probably $50.

$300 is expensive for a head???? We gave $300 for a set of valve springs!
Anyways, I say go for it if you have the money, then take it straight to a machine shop to get it checked. Shouldn't cost you much even if they have to fix valve seat or two. I doubt you getting the head from the guy to go get it checked before you buy it, but if you could, then do that, but again, probably want happen.
When you buy used parts like that, that's just the chance you got to take. Now if the head on your engine is exactly like the one you're thiking about gettin, then I say just take your head to a machine shop, and get it ported, etc. That way you know what you have.

Exactly what I was thinking. My valvesprings cost me $300.
My new heads are coming bare and are $1700.

Exactly, lol. Even the "race ready" heads you can buy for like $1800 or something still ain't ported! It aint no thing to drop $2500 on a set of small block heads! True, they will be very bad ass, but still!
You get K-Motion springs? Reason I ask is that's what we run. Shop says they are the best, I dont know. We change them every season just to be safe becuase 9 times out of 10, a valve spring is what causes engine trouble. And $300 beats the shit out of $5000!

the head has stock valvetrain components and is ported... and when i said rebuilt it meant that it was taken apart, checked for tolerances on springs, retainers, new cam seal, valve seals, verified the head was true (not warped) check the cams for wear, etc...

here's the story... my good friend Matt's friend bought the head for $700 and sold his gsr shortly afterwards... so he was asking $350 for it, but my buddy Matt told him he could sell it for $300. Matt is a smart bastard and he loves stuff to learn on so he told me he'd buy my head for $150... but i was supposed to buy an aem v2 from him also.(that didn't fit his 4dr gsr because his skunk2 intake manifold relocated his throttle body about 3 inches up.) So i told him that if the V2 fits my car i will give him my head, and he will give me the AEM V2 and swap the head on for me. I gain a rebuilt, ported head - installed and an aem V2 for 300$.... my friend Matt gains a gsr head with busted valve seals, to learn how to port on, and Matt's friend gains 300 bucks... how sweet is this deal...

No, I am running Patriot Dual Golds. Good through .650 lift. Gonna need it too, new cam is .629/.622.
The heads I am looking at are $1700 bare, with no machining. AFR 225's. Race heads basicly. I figure I can always have them ported later on, but they will still flow IMPRESSIVE without machining. 320cfm at .600 should be fine for now. :smokin:

Heard that. I'd say your new cam will be as big as lift cam as what mine is. I dont know what it is exactly, other then its smaller then a .640.
