Fuel Pump noise and suspension help

I recently bought a 1998 eclipse RS. The previous owner put a turbo in it i dont know what kind. Its also lowered quite a bit and has 3 inch exhaust. My problem is there is a annoyoing whining noise coming from rear passenger side. Its louder inside then out. It is there right away when i start the car and while i continue to drive. The noise cuts out a little when i accelerate. I was looking around on the net and seen that some other people had the same problem. No one answered them though. They asked if it could be just the fuel pump or the fuel-pressure regulator. Wondering if any one on here knows what the problem is and what to buy to fix it. I belive it still has stock fuel pump.

Also when driving on the freeway the suspension sucks. Real ruff and i wheel hop to the side when changing lanes or going over bumps. What would be the main components to help smooth out the ride?

it does not have in intercooler. know where i can buy a cheap one. I believe i need custom piping for it though. and help on that would be great too.

Thanks in advance
Mike

I can help with suspension, but that's about it. First off, on the main eclipse page, I have a sticky up right now on "Sharing suspension info."

Wheel hop needs to be taken care of pretty quick. Prothane inserts, about 25 dollars, can solve most of that problem quick and cheap. They go in your front and rear tranny mounts. The front is a five minute job, the rear is much more difficult, but doable. Both 97gstspyder and I have writeups on here on how to do the mounts, if you search. Keep in mind, this is to solve wheel hop.

The washerboard ride on the road has to do with the dampening of your shocks. It's because you installed lowering springs. That would be the first culprit to look into. Stock shocks have a compression and rebound ratio designed to work with stock spring levels. Lowering springs use higher values in (vain) hopes of keeping you off the bumpstops after you lower the car. They'll tear your shocks apart. The shocks could also just be old or abused.

If you want to test them to see if they are the problem before you commit to a purchase, take them out of the car and see if you can compress them by hand. You should be able to, buy not easily. Up until the end they should compress relatively uniform. Now try and compress them with a sudden jerk. They shouldn't move at all. Or, very little. By doing this test you can find out if which shocks are bad. Maybe you only need to buy the rears, for example. Stock shocks are not rebuildable.

Otherwise, buy new shocks. The closest stock shock for the gst and gsx are GR-2's, by Illumina, I believe. I imagine it's the same for non-turbo cars as well. In fact, I'm very sure of it. The suspension geometry is the same on all FF cars, afterall. Please don't buy crap from Autozone, etc. The dealer will sell you something similar and a tad softer than GR-2's for a lot of money. Mad chedda, yo. You're better off purchasing shocks from a DSM vendor. Unless you care about how well your car handles, just buy the GR-2's. If you do care about how your can handles, or if you want to lower the car, look at my suspension writeup. Konis are the best, but I'm not sure if its worth it to you on a non turbo eclipse, they're a chunk of change. Lastly, ride quality has everything to do with dampening, and 99% of that is shocks.

Install is neither easy nor hard. Another job very doable by a DIYer with a few hours and a little common sense. www.vfaq.com has install instructions. Be careful with removing the springs. More careful than the guy writing those instructions. Also buy a Haynes manual, or Chiltons. Lots of good information, even if you're scared to attack your own oil changes.

On an NT you'll not be needing an intercooler for knock reasons. I get the impression you know that, though. If you're just doing this to get a colder intake charge and because you have time on your hands, more power to you. The dealer will pork you. Junkyards value parts by a percentage of dealer price, and they'll pork you, too. www.dsmtuners.com/classifieds or www.ebay.com. I'm a fan of E-Bay. You can pick one up there (used 2g or 1g SMIC) for 25 dollars, which isn't bad. As you said, you'll have to custom mount and pipe for the SMIC.

Last note, write 98 eclipse rs in your sig, so you don't have to repeat it on each post. And thank you for writing in english with good grammer. You're my friend, already. Good luck.

Edit>> I wasn't reading close enough on the turbo added on. If you don't have an SMIC on yet, you desparately need one for tuning. The knock you'll get won't be good for that 420a. I was drinking this morning... just finished finals :) sorry. BTW, I don't normally start drinking at 10am
