Hello
I drive 3 years old (35.000 miles) Honda Civic 1.6. The warranty expired 2 month ago.
Since 2 weeks, the 2nd gear started to popping neutral. It happens the most often when accelerating on the curbs.
Last week-end, I have been driving thorough the mountains roads and that was the horror: I have been mostly busy catching the popping gear and squeezing it into the proper place! Driving for 25 years, I have never seen something like that!
But the crucial thing is, that right now my Honda and I, we are abroad, far from home (and from our regular car service), and I don't speak the local language. There is the Honda service here, with a manager speaking English, but I would like to know, what is the car problem, before I front the car mechanics...
I would be very grateful for your assistance,
Millefiori and her Honda "Ondine"

umm.. hmm... it could be the synchro... does it grind at all?? could be a bad bearing?

Hey, I own a 98 civic and I have the exact same problem. Every so often, when driving, the gear just pops out of second and into neutral. It grinds as it's coming out, then it just stays in neutral unless you put it back in. It's weird, because this is the only gear that it happens in.

2nd gear is the most worn gear because its the most used(lots of street racers like to "convserve" their second gear synchros by skipping 2nd and going directly to 3rd when daily driving; using 2nd only during races). my guess is its a worn synchro and/or bent linkage.
also you can try changing the transmission fluid and see if that helps some.

Yeah, actually when I bought the car in March of this year, We changed all of the fluids, did a complete check of everything... after we changed the transmission fluid it hasn't done it that much, but then again I haven't driven it much at all because it's been in my garage being sanded getting ready for new paint.

Probably the synchro.... I had the same problem in 3rd. Also, if your warranty just expired, I have had a lot of success just talking to them and getting them to do the work under warranty. Good luck
