ok the lower ball joint was a pain to get out, but i finally got it out. in the process the threads on the ball joint stud are all messed up and i cant get the castle nut back on it. how do i fix the threads? also, its only the last 3 or 4 threads, around the hole for the cotter pin. can i just file off the messed up threads since there really not used? help asap please

You can rethread it or you can try what you said. When replacing my upper ball joints, I actually misplaced one of the new cotter pins (old were fucked) so I customized a thicker cotter pin to fit.

You can run a thread chaser on it or just replace it.

I'd relplace it if you could. Better to have a good original part than something that was band-aided.

There is nothing wrong with re-threading a ball joint.
