Can some give me an idea of the time required to do a basic tune up on a 2001 escape and how much is the average hourly labor cost of a mechanic?

Depends On Who Does It - The First Took Me About 2hours After That Can Do In About 45min. - Remember When You Hear The Cost Not To Fall Down - The Cost Will Be Very High Due To The Fact You Have To Remove The Upper Intake To Gain Access To The Rear Plugs And Coils

Tune up is kinda of a misnomer. Don't need to change the plugs for awhile. No points and such or timing to mess with.
You need to change the oil and filter. If you use synthetic you will have an extra margin there if you let it go too long. You need to change the air filter when it is dirty (look at it to determine this). The owner's manual is a guide for all this stuff which is really called a "service interval" now. The most important thing is tire pressure and brake pad wear.
Also change your coolant every 2-3 years (They have long life coolant now).

If you have a lot of money, just take it in for dealer service. It costs more out here in Cali...(fornia) because of Arnold though.

I do my own because I use to be an auto tech, but you gotta have tools and stuff. Not a bad investment though. Then you have to get books and manuals and then get your hands dirty.
