The VR-4

So, My friend let's me drive his Mitsu Galant VR-4 on the way home from another friends house where we hung out tonight. I just like cruising along and dipping into the boost in first gear, and he doesn't mind so long as I don't screw anything up. On the way home though I caught the eye of an old Pontiac Sunfire convertible...the ugly ones that you only see every once in a while, but have tarp and trashbags on them to keep the water out. This one at least looked good of the little i saw of him. Coming out of the right turn onto the loop i stuck around in first gear and then put a little boost in it not realizing this guy wanted to play. I shift out of first and he's passin' me and slowing down like he wants to go, so i go for it. I pulled through second gear all the way up to him making sure i was next to him to shift into third and let him know whats on the line. We play around passing each other until we come into some traffic and he ducks in behind me and turns right at the next light. Rarely do i get that kind of attention in the Eclipse. Sleepers Rock.

The more recent models are better looking, IMO. Still, sounds like fun, wish I had a turbo...or a ton of NA power...or lots of power in general.

Those are nice cars, hard to find too (VR-4 is anyway). I'd love to own one someday.

i've seen 2, a forest green one w/ gunmetal 18" rims and i wouldn't have known it was a VR-4 if my friend hadn't said anything about it before i think there are 3 in town though...i was driving #106 of 2000

Add another to the list
Nice race though. How do those Galant vr4s perform...I actually know absolutely nothing about them.

If I remember correctly, they had the same motor as the DSM's (4G63 or whatever). I'm probably wrong, but I think I heard that somewhere :dunno:. I do believe they were also AWD. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah vr4 is rumored to stand for Mitsu's Viscous coupling method of AWD.

it handles pretty well, i wish i could have driven one in better condition that was stock, but the one i drove has a 2.5 cat-back, o2 dump (sounds horrible), and k&n airfilter, it is set at 8psi right now and (if the eclipse was running) the eclipse is faster and corners better, but it feels so good to be boosted and the AWD and turbo motor has much more potential than my car...the VR-4 is like the first generation of turbo AWD sedans...

the vr4 uses the 6g72 engine. its twin turbo'd, and they started with 300 hp and went to 320 in 94 or so. they are pretty much the greatest cars ever made but they weigh about 4200 lbs. and no matter what you say, NO eclipse could handle or corner better than a vr4. i use to own one, and it was great. i miss it alot. and its Viscous Recoupling 4. its all wheel drive and all wheel steering, but the wheels dont all turn, they camber in for better cornering. thats why the inside of the tires always go bald early.

or here's the sum up:
1991 Galant VR-4
4g63 engine AWD AWS Turbo w/ a 14b, 2.5 cat-back, k&n air filter, o2 dump, hi-flow cat, mbc, 255 fuel pump
It is not Twin Turbo
It is not a 3kgt
It weights somewhere less than 3300lbs
It is too high off the ground to corner very well
it is a SEDAN
it is rated at 190hp from the factory
it has crappy all-season tires and no strut tower bars to help cornering (i have a front strut tower bar)
btw at 8psi, my friend ran a similar time to mine, so we're looking forward to lining up together

Being the greatest car ever made is certainly a stretch no matter how you look at it.

possibly the best sleeper ever made? but thats kinda neck in neck with a bunch of other cars

the greatest car ever made was from the guy talking abuot the 3000gt.
i wholeheartedly nominate the galant vr4 as the best sleeper.

Even the 3000GT isn't what I would call the greatest car ever made. It was certainly a high feature car. When I think of the best sleeper I always think of the Buick Grand National. Personally I didn't even know about them until about 4 years ago and those things are usually very fast. The Galant v/r4 is a sleeper though I will give you that.

he was saying the 3000gt was the best car ever made, and its NOT (sorry 3kgt guys).
i think more people know about the GN vs the galant vr4, but thats just me.

i also don't think the GN was a 4-door, granted its a lot faster than the VR-4 stock, also, doens't the GN have 3.8 turbo plastered all over it? i kno my buddy's regal does and its a turn off for all the rice cuz they know they'll get stomped, the VR-4 Galant just says VR-4 on the back right and my friend took his off and made it a keychain :-/
