Zombies?

I watched Dawn of the Dead a couple of days ago and I started to think about zombies in real life. I starting thinking about how this could actually happen and all sorts of stuff. This made me decide to start a thread about it and get your guy's imaginations going. I know it may seem a little weird and after you're done you may think I'm either crazy or a nerd with no life. Either way I hope to get some input from you guys and your thoughts.

1. What would cause real life zombies?

Personally I think it would be a virus and not radiation or anything like what they said in the '60s movies. I know there are some people who believe that if there ever was some kind of virus it'd alter the brain. They believe the virus would get in there and mutate it and finally kill the person. After a minute or two this new mutated brain would re-animate the body and create a zombie.

I think this is the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. When somebody dies, they die. How could a virus bring a dead person back to life. Also, what would cause them to go on a rampage and bite people who haven't been infected?

I like the stance 28 Days Later took. I think this virus would be a different form of rabies. I've read before that people in the last stages or rabies before they die get violent thoughts in their heads and soon they attack people.

I think a fast, alternate form of rabies would make people go crazy and start attacking, maybe eating, people.

2. Would this virus come from the government, something in nature, or someplace like space?

I think the government as we speak could be making something like this. If you put this stuff in a dart and shot somebody from a helicopter that'd be it. Some area like the Middle East or deep in the jungles of Africa could be a place for this stuff to be tested or used.

I also believe another possibilty could be in nature. What if Mad Cow and Rabies joined together and formed some kind of mutated zombie virus? I could maybe see it happening if the circumstances were right.

3. If there was an outbreak could it be contained?

If there was an outbreak things would get pretty crazy. If the army, navy, and air force were able to get their soldiers gathered in the very early stages and formed a defensive barrier, then it could be stopped.

If they waited a while and tried to figure this thing out while the virus spread, and spread, and spread, then it might be a little to late to stop it.

4. How long would this last?

The human body can take some punishment but after a while it couldn't go no more. I'd give things three to four months before it was safe. In areas of extreme heat the flesh would cook anybody out all day. High winds with dust would act as sandpaper. The cells in the body getting no food or water would cause them to die. Finally, after a while, all living cells eventually fall apart, unable to hold their form.

5. What would YOU do? What if you turned on the TV and for some reason people were going crazy from some kind of virus and were attacking and eating non-infected people?

I'd raid a store, find some kind of bomb shelter and wait things out. I'd get me plenty of food, guns, and water for a long time. I'd find some kind of safe place. I'd go into a heavy wooded area, a shelter of some kind, or maybe out in the desert where it's really hot and dry.

Well these are my questions I have. I know this is pretty crazy and out there but I'm just asking "what if." I'd also like it if you guys were just a little serious about this and didn't joke about the whole thing. It's pretty silly but still.

I can't possibly imagine a virus that would be able to do that. Most viruses function by hijacking the replicating machinery of the body, then reproducing and destorying the cells that held them. IMO, there is no possible way for a virus to kill its host, then restart the body. The virus is better off allowing the host to live and being transmitted between hosts that way.

IMO 28 days later had a more "Real" feel to it than Dawn of the dead, I do like the fact that they never go through a dead phase like in dotd and just start attacking and what not. BTW Muscletang how would you get guns? You have to think about gun stores and how their owners would treat them if they were in your situation, I dont really believe they'd go "Sure take what you need!" also getting there would be a big problem with all the Zombies everywhere, I was reading something similiar to this and I got an idea of where I would go, first i'd try to get my mom with me and just haul ass in our truck over to super wal*mart and start barracading the place with other people if they were there, yes chances are that there might be zombies there, but im willing to take a chance especially since the truck in driving has a grill gaurd and why I chose it over my Maro or MC, Super Wal*Mart also has a crapload of food, entertainment, and a few guns/ammo. So it's pretty perfect, the only problem with my plan is, how will I know when the outbreak happend? See, I dont really watch the news alot, so i'd kinda have to be happening around me already, making my chances of survival really low.

to answer your questions aside from #1, 2, and 5.

For #3, yes I think it could be contained, but really if they only acted quickly, knowing how skeptical the people in the gov act, I'd say that the chances of them really bringing the zombies down is kinda low because they'd try to find out wth its happening.

For #4, I'd give it a month or 2, cells cant go really long without water and when was the last time many people drank more glasses of water than coke, which already dehydrates the body.

Viruses that kill their hosts are failures. Rally Sport is right about hijacking the replication... See you're more on with the rabies strain than anything else. People don't die then re-animate for the soul purpose of FUCKING OTHER PEOPLE UP... just doesn't happen. Just won't. When that heart stops pumping, it needs something to get it started again, i.e. a burst of electricity or a false pumping, as with CPR. The brain can't tell it to start or stop as it pleases. I'd say the rabies thing is the best. And if it were me, I'd be one of the looters. In a big way. I'm a big fan of exploiting situations to the best of my ability. I've already got a 9mm and a 30/30 that would be perfect as a nice little sniper rifle. But if given the ideal opportunity, I'd steal one of the Secret Service's JARs (Stands for: Just Another Rifle) that they use as sniper rifles to protect the president. Sit on the top of one of the taller buildings in the city with a nice supply of water and fuck me some zombies UP.

Was it the original DotD, or the remake from a year or so ago?

Anyway, my :2cents:
1: Disease or 'magic'. The original "Night of the Living Dead" suggested that it was radiation/disease from Venus that caused the dead to wake. It could also be that the disease made them seem dead for awhile, then start moving again. Voodoo suggests that Zombies are possible. In the original "Dawn of the Dead" one of the characters quoted his Voodoo priest grandfather and said when Hell was full the dead would walk the earth.

2: I think government is more likely at this point. 28 days made a good case for the risks of genetic and disease research. If something gets out it will be a mess.

3: It would depend mainly on speed and method of transmission. If by contact, immediately, then it would spread much more quickly then if it took 2-3 days to get to the point where it could be transmitted. If bodily fluids were involved (28 days) or by sneezing, etc it would be slower to spread. Also, a disease that starts in the middle of nowhere will spread much more slowly than one that starts in the middle of a large city. Also, it would depend on if the person was obviously infected (like 28 days) or carried the germs around and didn't get sick for a few days(but could still transmit during that time)

4. Depends on 3. In the case of the bubonic plague, it lasted several years. In the case of the flu epidemic of I think 1918-19, it lasted less than a year. In both cases a large percentage of the population was lost.

5. Since I'm a pilot, I'd fly to as desolate an area as possible. With plenty of supplies.

KICK ASS I LOVE ZOMBIES!!!!

1. What would cause real life zombies?
I agree with the rabies thing, its the only thing that we know of that makes the most sense. Aside from something like a parasite that could enter the brain. Things like electric shock on certian parts of the brain and spine causes physical things to happen such as your arm moving. That could be the only way that I could see anything else causing it.

2. Would this virus come from the government, something in nature, or someplace like space?
I would say the most logical place (I just said logical and we are talking about zombies, ha!) would be the gov't. Things in nature happen by chance, I just couldnt see things happening to turn out just right to cause a species to turn into zombies. The space thing, I could see it happening but thats just because I have watched too many sci-fi movies in my life.

3. If there was an outbreak could it be contained?
This also depends on what kind of disease it is. If it is airborne and takes a few days for symptoms to show up, we are all dead. Think of it like this, if someone flies into LAX and has it, it will be spead all over their plane, people from that plane will fly from LA across the country, some will fly to japan, some to hawaii, etc. If it is spread by bodily fluids, yeah no big deal.

4. How long would this last?
I think something like this would last for a long time and keep popping up occasionally. I am sure there will be some zombie who will be stupid and get lost and end up somewhere in bumfuck virginia and the disease will flare up again, then it will be put down, then it will happen again etc.

5. What would YOU do? What if you turned on the TV and for some reason people were going crazy from some kind of virus and were attacking and eating non-infected people?
Oh I would have a field day. Yall might not believe me but I am seriously off my rocker. If something like this was happening I would go to the closest place with the most people, rob a pawn shop for some guns (if I could find any) and would go on a massive zombie killing spree. I would do things like put a dead cow by a gas station to try and draw a bunch of zombies in then blow it up. I might spend an afternoon on top of a building with a rifle picking off zombies...maybe a few molitov (sp?) coctails. Oh I would have much more fun than anyone should have.

My truck...and a bitchin' grille guard. :smokin: seriously though, I'd prolly really do that to my truck...and I'd gather people, friends and family and such and I'd stay up in my room and wait that shit out until It's all done with. If not I've got a pretty good 12 gauge and we got other guns, and my uncle in Minnesota has almost any gun you can think of, from BB guns to AK-47's. Or I'd set up some heavy duty electrical fence running off of a generator, sumbitches come near my house they'll get fried.

Sorry RS92 I didn't read every bit of your post, but why would you do that when you could just put a kick ass cattle catcher on your Camaro and take em out at the ankles!?

Because the grill gaurd is already on the truck, plus it has more space than my Maro so, more shit on it to blow some zombie head off!

Haha yeah, plus it's more weight so when you hit the fuckers they'll be in pieces. But I'm gonna go start preparing by building a remote operated turret in the back of my truck and putting plenty of reinforcement on it. Oh shit, can't forget the flame thrower either. :evillol:

Hehe...only if you can make me a custom chain that's like 13 foot long so I can make a 6 foot wide bar up in front of the vehicle and cut their legs off.

That's pretty bad though in the movie when the one guy has the chainsaw goin and they get in the accident and he like, cuts the girl apart.

Just ran across this thread... so first 1-5  but for fun,

1. What would cause real life zombies?

2. Would this virus come from the government, something in nature, or someplace like space?

3. If there was an outbreak could it be contained?

4. How long would this last?

5. What would YOU do? What if you turned on the TV and for some reason people were going crazy from some kind of virus and were attacking and eating non-infected people?

I also liked 28 Days Later because it really makes you think about what if, but Dotd had better FX IMO, except I like the eyes in 28 days (Oh man I still remember the previews with the black guy with red eyes that they held captive lookin in then breakin the window :shiver:, I've always hated dark/black windows)

1. A mutation of a virus (natural or artificial), viruses evolve quicker than other organisms (look at the flu or common cold, always a new strain) and especially when isolated,

2. Either, see above

3. If there are enough of us fuckers out there takin 'em out, and again depending on transmission of the disease, then yeah,
HA thats like asking if some country could take over the US with a land invasion and no air/heavy artilary, we have the right to bear arms and we use that shit!

4. It could last a long time, (who said they wont drink water and eat?), and i agree secondary outbreaks could be as bad as the first...

5. Oh I only wish I had the chance, I've got land, I've got guns (12ga., 24ga., 3 x .22s, .38, etc.), chain saws, hatches, axes, and never underestimate the power of household products in the right amounts...:smokin:, its outside of city limits, and there is a lake with fish and "fresh" water (boil it its ok), I agree it would be TOOO much fun, if you saw the original DOTD Itd be me and my bro and friend sittin at the end of the field pickin 'em off (it was worth watchin, through all the bad make-up, for that shit)

Thanks for the thread, lots of fun
