differences between VLSD and LSD

i dont know much bout lsds and just wondering what the differences are. i have a friend thats selling his VLSD for $90 is it worth it? he's selling it because he just bought some other type of lsd. thanks.

yes very well worth it

lsd = limited slip differential
vlsd = viscous lsd

viscous came stock in 180s (or as an option in 240s). limited slips are too confusing, im sure there are write ups somewhere online. there are viscous, helical, clutch, etc.

for all practical use viscous is just fine.

only down side is. The fluid tends to "break down" over time. Kind of like a dead body decays. But im sure you could just add new fluid. For 90 bux, might as well. you'll enjoy it.

viscous is not as good for drifting because the fluid has a limit to how much pressure it can hold. it tends to slip in high torque high slip situations if one wheel fights too hard to slip. helical is optimum or so ive heard. it has a more progressive hold than clutch and can handle drifting well
clutch type is fine but you may get pwned once in a while because it is basically instant engagement and makes the car understeer a lot more. it also changes the handling characteristics instantly when it engages, so if your not ready for it...

IIRC viscous LSD is bad for drifting because the fluid breaks up at high temp and therefore during hard drifting it slowly turns into open diff. I think this is right but I am not sure.
Also I read somewhere on this forums that the difference between open diff and Vlsd is like difference between vlsd and clutch lsd.

True, but for 90 bucks, it is definately worth it. If you do not want it, sell it to me for $100. You cannot even find one on ebay for under $200. I am saving for a KAAZ LSD right now, but until you can afford a better one, a viscous would work fine for a while.

lol, is it really that bad when it engages to change the car's handling that much. Not while drifting but while regular driving. you make it sound like be preparred to whip the wheel when it engages cuz you may lose control randomly driving.

Thats funny how people buy it for more control, but it makes them understeer. oxymoron. I want to get an lsd. im thinking a 1.5 way though. I heard thats a little bit easier on the understeer part. As in, there's more on a 2 way compared to a 1.5 right? And no, im not looking to drift. So i dont really need a 2 way.

1.5way is much more streetable then a 2way and if you aren't making a drift car, you don't need the 2way.
