This morning I was pulling out of the driveway to go to work and noticed while driving in reverse my car was making a wierd noise.. I would almost call it grinding but I can't be sure.. but it was a low pitched noise. Anyway, I put the car in drive to pull back in the driveway and the engine just shuts off.
Tried it a second time, engine sounds fine in Park, in reverse can hear that low noise, but when I put it in drive the engine shuts off.
I check oil and transmission fluids, I am fine on oil but I am below the "add" for transmission fluid.
I just can't help but think the transmission is toast. I did notice a large hose disconnected from behind the tranny dipstick I posted about that here:
The car doesn't die if I keep the gas pressed down when switching gears

But I can't shake the feeling that hose is the least of my worries now.
Thanks

Hmm... Well clearly the first thing to do is fill the transmission back up. If it's actually that low on fluid then that shaved some time off its life.
I don't have the answer but I have some ideas for more information that might be useful:
Does it rev in Park alright? And neutral?
Does it die as soon as you put it in drive? How about in "1"?
Is there any strange noise when you put it in drive? Clunking, scraping, grinding? Slipping? Or does it just plain stall?

Thanks for posting!
It idles fine in park and neutral and dies as soon as it is put in any gear (drive, reverse, 1st,)
If I rev the gas when putting it in gear it will drive but I do hear some kind of scraping noise it seems or perhaps its just the engine running real rough
