A/C blowing Hot Air

I have a 2K Villager having 62000K. The a/c has stopped working and the the mech. says that there is a leak in the pipe that carries the cold air from compressor to rear occupant. It will cost 650 to replace this. What are my options in getting this stuff working ? Can this go bad so quickly ? Seems to be the case of poor design
