352 to 390 Conversion

I have a 66 Galaxie 500 with the 352, automatic transmission. How much trouble would it be for me to convert to a 390? Can I use the same transmission? Will the motor bolt right up or will I need to modify things? Thanks

Sure, this is an old post....I must have missed it.

For the record a 352 is IDENTICAL in every way to a 390. Everything will bolt up.

If you do swap one over, just keep in mind the 390 might have different accessory brackets than the 352. The brackets should swap over.

If you want to keep the 352 carb, the intake manifold will bolt on to the 390, as will the distributor.

The only trick is the trans. If the 352 has a manual trans, you will have to find a manual trans 390 or have the a pilot bushing hole drilled into the back of the crank by a machine shop. If you have an auto trans, then any 390 will fit.

I haven't seen a 390 crank that didn't have a place for the bushing on the crank. I have done quite a few engine swaps with the FE (390) series engines and haven't run onto any. The manual tranny uses a bushing the auto doesn't. And the way I get them out is to fill the hole with grease and find a wood or steel shaft that will just fit the hole. Put the shaft in the hole and hit it with a hammer. You may need to add more grease as you get the bushing moving out of the hole.
