Rover 200 Radiator question

Hi,
I have a K series engine in Rover 200 uk spec - 1.4i S reg. About 4 months ago i had the head gasket replaced at a cost of over £500. And then it broke down again last week. Radiator was empty - and the amount of "oil" had increased on the dip stick. No guesses as to where it went.
To cut a long story short - i did an oil change on a B road and left the radiator empty to get the vehicle home (approx 3 miles).
My question is two parts - do you think its likely the garage that replaced head gasket screwed it up - or do you think something else has caused it to go again.
2nd part is - how far do you think i can drive it "dry". As soon as i start putting water in i can see i will have to drain it again.
Thanks
