Shifter grind?

When I was driving someone's 1992 Stealth R/T... it always made this grind noise when I put it in third if I shift fast. But it doesn't *grind* it just makes a little noise and vibrates just a tad. Well, I was test driving a 1991 3000GT SL and it does this in practically every gear if I shift fast. I even watched my footing with the clutch all the way in shifted and it still made the sort of "buzzing grind" noise. And another 1993 R/T Stealth that I drove did it in 5th gear usually.
Do any of you have this problem? Does the transmission fluid need changing or changed to something better? The noise sounds like it only comes from the shifter and not the tranny. Sorta "in-the-car" noise, doesn't sound external like when you totally grind gears. I think the shifters are just wierd but such a coincidence that it does it in all 3 3/S's that I drove. But each had their own gear that they did it in. Any thoughts?

It does sound like our all to common occurance of the syncros going bad. You say its sounds like its in the shifter and not the transmission itself? Thats a bit different, but I bet its still the syncros grinding to dust.

So that pretty much means the transmission would go in some time. How much would it be on average to replace the syncros?

The synchro itself was like $80 or something (I forget) at www.kormex.com (I think that's the site). LOL Anyways it's the labor that's stinkin' expensive. I think young said he had his done for like $600?

Looks like Kormex is a lawn and garden site. :) Anyway, was the $600 for the synchros and the install or just the labor charge?

buy a service manual they usually have rebuild guides in them. Save a few bucks on labor.

LMAO My badd bro. Haha I should have checked it out before I posted it. The site is supposed to be: www.kormextrans.com The $600 was just for the labor but it may vary from shop to shop and region to region. However, it's probably safe to say that you'll be dumpin' about that amount for the installation. If you're mechanically inclined and would like to try it yourself, try this: www.vr4stealth.com/transaxle_syncro_replace.htm I need to get my second and third gear synchros redone as well but I don't have any money right now. I'm just gonna change the gear oil soon and hopefully that'll help with the grinding for the mean time. Good luck and post back one everything's done!
