Question about the 4.6

Hey sorry if this is a question asked all the time but I couldn't find it. I'm looking to buy a semi wrecked sn bodystyle gt to replace my looser v6. Why a v6? because when I was younger I wasn't allowed to get a v8. I'm having a problem finding a doner car with a 5.0 in it (94-95) but I see 96-98's like crazy. All that aside I see all the time that you guys say don't buy the 96-98's because the engine isn't that great. My friend had one and it seemed like it was always in the shop. Some plastic piece melted once. And no I'm not thinking of swapping the 4.6. What is it about it that isn't that good. Is it anything I can fix when I am rebuilding it? Not trying to affend any owners of it....It just seems like when anyone asks everyone says go 5.0 or the 96-98 cobra's. Thanks.....

If you don't feel like reading it I just wanted to know whats bad about the 96-98 gt engines and if I can fix it myself.
