How to get codes?

1997 just had fuel pump replaced, have a feeling it may be a loose vapor hose or something related to the work involved in replaceing the pump- I need to know how do I get the codes w/o a scanner? I realize this same thing has been posted probably 50 times already, and it seems the only thing the search engine here can find is that page that says: "page not found"

If you live close to an auto zone, take it there. It's a free scan.
If you live in Canada Canadian tire probably offeres the same free service. But I can't promise you that it's free.

You should be able to short pins A&B of the ALDL connector with a paper clip to get your dash light to blink any error codes. You can make a data cable to get full scan information on any PC through the serial port for under $5 with WinADL or other freeware. Google "ALDL" you'll find tons of info. Here's a page that shows the ALDL connector pinout so you know what pins A&B are, and it shows how to build the cable. http://winaldl.joby.se/aldlcable.htm

Good Luck

He could burn out his ECM doing that... He has a 97 which requires the use of an ODBII scanner. You can only use the paperclip on ODBI..

Late 1996 and up all use OBD2 and must use a scan tool to get codes

It's actually late 1995 and up. 1995 was the transition year, the ones with the ECM under the hood need a scan tool. All 1996 and up require a scan tool.
