I have a '92 grand am with the aluminum wheels. The wheels have started to oxydize, and I would like to know how I can fix them. Wire wheel them, and then put a clear coat over?

Also, has a slight fluctuation in rpm as engine warms up. Not electrical related. Could it be bad valve cover gaskets or PCV valve? Haven't had a lot of time to troubleshoot lately, so any help would be appreciated.

Try an aluminum wheel cleaner first, wire wheeling may grind off too much material, which will just make things worse. Try a scrubpad instead with the cleaner.

Rpm fluctuate not really related to gaskets, not really PVC, but pull the pvc, shake it, see if it rattles [rattling means it okay]. Sounds more like your IAC, I post the link to assist ya

The flucuation could be IAC related, like Tam said, or since your saying that it's happening as it warms up, I'm thinking that it could be misfiring, or could have a bad fuel pressure regulator, or the fuel pump could be going south (bad pumps overheat when running for a while, causing lack of fuel = flucuating rpms.) Also would be obvious suspects, like the wires and coil packs.

1992 Pontiac Grand Am -V6 3spd. auto w/TCC
203,576 miles.
Tranny was replaced at some point before we got it.

Here is what I know:

New plugs, wires, and coils.
Tranny flushed, new filter.
Injectors cleaned recently
Pressure at rail ~38psi
New fuel filter.
New air filter

Bad tranny mount -rear pass. side
only 26 mpg max
loose wires under dash -hit bumbs, some things go haywire (vent, AC, turn signals)
Tach doesn't work,
temp guage don't work.
Gas guage doesn't move until on the last gallon (reads full.)

(Shift into reverse.) As the tranny shifts, the engine drops low on rpm, almost dies, then comes back up to ~1100, then down to normal. All happens in less than 2 seconds. Fluid has 13,000 miles on it, and has not discoloration or odor. Shifts funny, like the engine dies for the second between shifting gear.

Seems a little rough when at dead stop, you hit the accelerator. Won't smoothly start moving, always a little jerk.

After running for awhile, check the oil, and 'steam' comes out the dipstick hole.


It's really my brothers car, but mine has been down for the last month (trying to fix between sleep and homework). I really don't want to spend hours trying to figure out his.
