Adding Compass/Temp to Existing OH Console

I searched these forums with no luck, but came across this question in another forum.

Anyone know if its possible to add the factory (or an aftermarket that looks just as good) to a '01 Silverado that has the rest of the overhead console (sunglass holder, garage door, map lights) already there?

Is it pre-wired or would I have to find a junker/visit eBay for all the components?

And lastly, does the factory overhead include MPG gauge?

Thanks.

He did not receive any answers, but I was hoping you guys could help me with the same question.

I want to know the answer too.

'Bout the only thing my truck's missing (aside from a K&N or Air Raid) and a scoop as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know if you are interested, but they do sell an aftermarket rearveiw mirror that has the cumpass and temp. as well as the auto dimming feature, and looks just like the one GM puts in there trucks.

You can look here for examples. I think with the mirror you just have to run some wires to power it.

My grandparents have an Astro with the OH it has compass temp and MPG but it is also much bigger than the one in my truck, which has the sunglasses holder and map lights.

Yeah, I could care less for auto-dimming. I'd rather have the compass, MPG gauge and temp sensor.

What I really need to know is if all the trucks are pre-wired. Then I'll have an answer as to whether or not its worth hitting the junkyard.

My thoughts exactly.

Hey Faze, have you had the guts to try and pry off that blank panel. I tried one day while sitting in traffic, but didn't have my tools with me. It seemed like it didn't want to come off without breaking the outer edges.

Just curious.

Right after posting that I went outside and carefully pryed off the bezel... I don't see any pre-existing wires, only the ones for the OH lights (Orange-Black).

Damn, Answers that question.

Guess I could always go to the dealer at get the pocket that goes in the 2004 in that space. At least get some use outta that spot.

Might have to take the whole overhead down and take it in to make sure the pocket fits. From what I can tell, only a single screw and some clips hold it in.

I might still hit the junkyard if I find one locally that has any cheap (riiiiight) and see what all is involved. Might be worth calling the parts counter too, just to talk to them and ask about the wiring.

I just added an autodim mirror with compass to my '02 HD with overhead console. The harness and plug were there. Don't try to pry that blockout panel out...it is very easy to remove the overhead console by removing the screw at the very front, dropping the front of the console down. Then pull forward to disengage the rear clips. I reached up through the hole in the headliner and tugged on a small harness that was clipped to the roof reinforcing. Out popped a plug that plugged into the mirror just fine, and the mirror happened to be out of an older Oldsmobile.
