Here's a little information that may help a few people out whose vehicle have run out of warranty.
I have a '02 Jetta TDI 92,000km the airbag light came on so had to bring to dealer. It was diagnosed with a fried AirBag controller. Cost of this unit is $587.00 Canadian plus 1 hour labor. Needless to say I was a little pissed off since my mileage was over the warranty. Before giving the dealer the go ahead to replace the controller, I made a call to Volkswagen Canada and politely described my problem. I was hoping that since this was asafety issue Volkswagen should incur some of the costs. Volkswagen promised me a call back the next day with an answer.
Sure enough the following day I received the call they promised, and to my delight they would replace the fried AirBag controller at Volkswagens expense, but I would have to pay the 1 hour labor.
I was one very happy camper. The gentleman I had spoke to who started my claim stated that Volkswagen has a program called the "Goodwill Gesture" for vehicles that are slightly over mileage for warranty claims.
So next time any of you run into a similar problem let me suggest that you take the route I did and you may be pleasantly surprised on the outcome.

Wow, very nice. I've heard of things like that happening, but very rarely. Have you gotten the work done yet. I know of others who have gotten the head company to say they will cover the costs, and then the dealership still trying to refuse to do the work, sometimes even when it's under recall. So then they had to get back on the phone and get stuff straightened out with the head office.

Anyway, good find and good luck.

Yes work has been done. I was on my way to Ireland and dropped the car off. My father in law picked up the car and sure enough only charged for the labor.

I was hoping that you could supply the phone number or where you found the phone number that started your claim. Thanks.
