87 Ranger overdrive problem

Hiya,
It doesn't seem to shift into overdrive except when the throttle is closed which makes it useless. If I get it up to about 50mph on OD, let off the gas the rpm's drop, then change to D and the rpm's go back up, so it seems to be shifting into overdrive, just not when I'm on the throttle. Any sugestions?

It seems that any information that might help me fix this is just not out there.
Can anyone give me a hint on how the OD is controlled? Computer? Sensors? Kick-down switch?

Wow, nobody knows anything at all about the OD? Any idea how its triggered? Is there a kick-down switch? Computer controlled? Vacuum kick-down?

Been waiting for someone to respond to your question. I have overdrive problems, too. 88 Ranger. It won't go into OD at all.

Well, I'm about to go the old fashioned route and hit the library. When I find something out, I'll let you know.

I have a 91 Ranger and the overdrive works for the most part but it starts to buck at highway speeds. If I shift to Drive the bucking stops.

Have you tried this site yet?

I haven't found and answers to the OD problem yet but it's a nice Ranger resource. Your problem sounds vacuum related, for what that's worth. Have you checked adjustment in the kick-down?Does it go into passing gear too easily?
For my problem, I'm changing filters and fluid, including draining the torque converter. If that don't do it. I'm looking for a new tranny.

I do know that that 88s were electronic controlled overdrive from the ECC. You might have a fault code that needs resolved. I converted my 88 ECU to a 90' cali. MAF ECU. I was using a 65mm MAF from a 5.0L mustang, but it suddenly went bad and my computer starting throwing all sorts of codes. During this time my overdrive would not kick in. Keep in mind that in 87->88 there were several changes. Like the 87 has EGR and a knock sensor. The 88+ doesn't. There are all differences in fuel pump circuits and small changes to the transmission solenoid circuits throughout all of the years. Sorry, I do not have every single wiring diagram or every single circuit memorized, so on the 87, I am not exactly sure how it works. Never been there, never done that.

Have you checked the vacuum modulator, it is usually located on the transmission.
