golf starting problem (Post #4)

i have a 96 golf cl, and i can't get it to start with teh key. if i push it and kick the clutch it starts easily and everything runs fine. occasionally while driving, it makes 2 short beeps at what seems to be random intervals. temperature and oil/gas levels are ok...??
when the key is turned to ignition pos, it sounds like the starter motor is turning (or almost turning) but the engine doesn't turn. could this be the battery? i took it to a mechanic and he was sure it was the startermotor, so replaced it and it started fine according to him once. when we turned it off and tried to start it again the same thing happneded, low noise from the starter but engine not turning.???? i checked all the fuses, and they're ok. there's 12 v at the starter terminal, and when the key is in start position there's 12 volts at the red wire going to starter/solenoid????
it's so frsutrating... the car was just fine before winter, any ideas? i'd hate to have to change another part that makes no difference. any pointers will be appreciated.
thanks.

I had this problem with my GL. It turned out to be the electrical part of the ignition switch. So try that. It was only like 28 I think.

i have the same exact problem. about two months ago i couldnt start my 95 VW Golf. i replaced the starter, the battery, and then the ignition switch. The ignition switch was the problem- it ran totally fine for a while then i was driving and all of a sudden the car just died, acts as though it was happening all over again with the ignition switch. i tried push starting it (which worked before) and nothing. i have power at my ignition coil, and at the distributor cap, starter has power- but will not start. you can hear the fuel pump turn on so i know its not that, but im running out of ideas.

I assume you're saying the engine cranks but won't start. Have you pulled a plug wire to see if you are getting a spark when cranking?

no cranking... just the sound of a small motor spinning.

i'm going to try replacing the ignition switch, sounds like there's a good chance. can someone tell me where the ignition switch is, thanks

If the starter motor is turning then the problem isn't the ign switch. The problem is either the starter is bad or the flywheel has lost teeth.
