If you are going to all this trouble....seriously....forget the 4.2 6 cyl. They are not particularly powerful, althought they have good low end torque for off roading. Generally, though it will not be much faster than a 2.5.

Consider a Chevy 350 small block. Its lighter than the 42, WAY more powerful, and cheaper to buy.
Chances are it will be no more difficult to swap in than a 4.2.
There are lots of kits to swap them into a CJ, its a common exchange.

You did not say what trans you have....getting it to bolt up may be easy (try Transadapt).

why does every body always wnat to drop a chevy motor in to a jeep
thats like putting a cats heart in a dog

you should put a amc 304 or 360 in you jeep or stick to the 4.2 they are great motors too

I agree chevy and jeep just don't go together... I personally wouldn't want to open the hood of my jeep and see a chevy motor... Thats bad... almost as bad as lowering a jeep, putting those dumb ass 20inch rims and a muffler that sounds like a pissed off bee

The chevy 350 will fit perfectly into any jeep!!and for a fraction of the cost of the much less powerful and less reliable amc 360 or any 4.0l. Make sure you get rid of all motorcraft or amc ignition parts while your at it...they are junk as well.
Im on my 3rd jeep 350 conversion now and im using the old amc motors as dock anchors ,they are great at;.. Not moving!!!
Now when i look under my hood.....im not looking for the problem!!

Advantage with a 350 Chevy is you can get parts for them much easier, easy to work on and the 350 Chevy is the cheapest to build over a 304 and a 360.Plus the parts interchange a lot with a small block Chevy. You can take off a starter off a 4.3 and install it on a 350 Chevy. The 350 Chevy is the most popular crate engine out there also put in Ford,Dodge and Plymouth street rods.
