temp gauge acts funny ...

Here is the deal ... last summer i was driving and i noticed that the temp gauge is not showing aything, like it was disconected, the needle points just off the scale ( on the cold side ).

The needle ocasionaly will show temperature but, suddenly drop off again. Here is the kicker, if i stop turn the enine off the gauge will show temperature.

Any ideas ?

sounds like a bad ground, run a heavy wire from the engine to the chassis and see if that helps, if not check the wire to the temp sending unit and the unit itsself

Stock gauges are known for the abilitly to be inaccurate, esp after the years. I know my stock temp gauge was reading about 20* hotter then my autometer gauge does.
