cannot change headlight bulb!(escort 98)

I know loads of you are thinking what a dork, but i have been using a haynes manual and i can get the back off the headlight but the bulb wont budge,i have done as the book says,i really don't want to force it,anyone have a clue????

if i can recall you grab the black ring and turn it only about a quarter of a turn.
