85 celica gts convertible top problem

Help! ! Just got this car and the top does not go down automatically. Have to manually push down (not too hard to do) but coming back up is tough on a girl. What do I start checking in order to figure out if something needs to be replaced. Would like to try to do it myself. Also, the electric windows don't work too good. Can I clean "contacts" in the door? Thanks. Any help is appreciated.
