Just recently my 95 TA started missing at an idle. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, tempature sensor that goes to the computer and replaced all intake leaks. Just yesterday I talked to a friend who is a GM master certified mechanic and he said with my car chuging once put in gear that it was my distributor. He told me that the water pump can leak since the waterpump is located directly above my distributor which causes the distributor to rust and I am worried that it is the problem. . Any help would be nice thanks. Oh Could someone tell me how to reset the ignition timing on my LT1. If anybody else has any suggestions as to how to fix this problem it would be a great help. Thanks alot.

the only way to manipulate the timing on the LT1 is with the PCM. to do that you need LT1 edit (www.carputing.com) or Tunercat (www.tunercat.com)go to the forum at www.pcmtuners.com and www.fbody.com for advice... lots of really smart guys out there. good luck

Your friend is correct, sort of. The possible leaking water pump doesn't exactly cause the distributor, aka the optispark, to rust. It can lead to moisture build up inside the optical pickup of the distributor, causing the car to misfire, miss at idle, surge at wide open throttle and can cause the car to just quit running all together.
While GM hit it huge with an optical pick up distributor, their unfortunate placement of the water pump, of all things, directly above it, was a big mistake. Water pumps to tend to leak a little, especially when they go bad....now why would you place a distributor that needs to be completely dry to work at its prime, directly underneath it?
I know that this was posted a few weeks ago, but this might be of some help to you. I know about this, as I am a previous owner of a 95 Trans Am convertible. I was plagued by faulty water pumps, bad optisparks, and electrical gremlins that ultimately led me to sell the car.

My 01 Firebird had a Misfire on Cylinder #3...and i had my wires and plugs changed and it didn't help so i replaced my coil pack and it runs great now. You should have a diagnostic done to find out where the misfire is coming from and go from there. Hopefully that helps! Tell me how it goes. :-)
