Starting Problem-Help pls!!

94 Ranger would not start / no engine crank. Noticed battery cables loose. Tried jumping and the starter would catch, but not enough to turn engine over.

I noticed when we were jumping that whenever I turned the engine switch on, the Battery Gauge went all the way negative, almost like it was shorting out. Don' think that s right.

Any ideas? Thanks
