I have a 99 cherokee, that when I step on the brakes I hear this god awful grinding noise, the slower I am going the louder the noise. What could be causing this? I added brake fluid and it is still making the noise. I replaced the pads last about 2 years ago. Thanks for any input.

Check the pads. Sounds like you need to change them again. Also sounds like you may need rotors too.

Had that problem on my XJ. Shoes had plenty left on them, but the wheel cynlinder was leaking and had contaminated the braking shoe material, and it gave that gawd-awful grinding sound. Replaced the wheel cynlinder and shoes to solve the problem.

well...I took it in on sat...and it pretty much needed everything. on the front - pads, rotor, new pistons (they had become warped, and was the culprit in my grinding noise), calipers rebuilt....rear shoes, and one of the wheel cylenders was leaking so they both got replaced, replaced spings and was able to save the drums by refurbishing...total setback $740...thanks for all the input
