i need to get a catalytic converted put on my car so that i can pass emissions. the guy who owned the car before me put on an exhaust that didn't have one, so should i just buy a universal and cut and clamp...? its a 85 crx btw 5 speed

unless its a SI or the person put a header or the SI exhaust manifold on then the cat is bolted right to the manifold but yes to answer your question you can just cut and clamp a universal cat on
