synthetic oil burning

i run mobil 1 10-30 synthetic, and i seem to go thru about 1.5 quarts between oil changes, no oil under the car, and the motor is only about 12,000 miles old, thats really new. anyone got any ideas, thers not smoke at all.

Have you ran synthetic the entire life of the motor?

i would switch from the synthetic oil, it tends to be a little more thin than conventional oil, which is most likely what is causing it to burn

* i got my car at around 96k, and i had used synthetic oil in it until recently, when my car hit about 120k a local mechanic told me to switch to a high mileage oil because he said it would coat the components and protect a little better than synthetic.. I also add slick 50 engine treatment after every oil change.

synthetic oil appears to be thinner because it is more consitant in viscosity. It is not thinner, if it was, it would have a different viscosity rating.

very true.. i didnt take that into consideration.

*being as how i am still a "beginner" of sorts.. i generally do go by feel and look..

This is definitely a noob question but how does the oil turn black? Is it becuase of the heat generated within the motor while the oil flowiin through it (i'm tryin to smart here).

The only other place it could go is in the coolant system. Open up the radiator cap and see if you can see oil floating on the top of the water in there. You could also check the spark plugs to see if any of them see to have some oil on them. Also check your tail pipe because if you are burning oil you'll be able to feel it inside of there.

It's pretty much dirt and other stuff like that. There are small bits and pieces of stuff that get sucked into the engine that the air filter and/or fuel filter can't get. After a while they work their way down the piston and get down into where all the oil is.

If yo uhave had synthetic oil in it since the engine was new/rebuilt, that may be the cause. Most engine builders reccomend that you use mineral base oil for the break in period (they say synthetics protect so well that the engine doesn't get to break in) then switch to synthetic if you want.
