Alloy wheels

Hey my car is a 00' GX with :-( the 15 inch black wheels with hubcaps on them. lol. anyways, is it possible to (and without any pricey mods or anythign) get the alloys from a junkyard (one around here has 4 of them for 100 dollars each) get new tires and just mount them on, and not have to change anything else? If its this easy then i will do it, but i dont know much about cars so someone please enlighten me...I

Oh i forgot to include that the alloys the junkyard has are from an alero, im not sure what year, but i think they are the 16 inch ones that i see on just about every alero out there...u know?

I think you'll just need the new tires...

A lot of Alero's have 15" inch wheels stock. The GLS and GL2 came with 16" stock. Optional on other models such as a GL1, maybe GX etc.

$100.00 per stock Olds alloy wheel even if 16" is pricey. They are a lot cheaper on EBay. I saw some 15" or 16" a few months ago up for bid or buy it now below that figure. You might even want to consider aftermarket wheels. Regardless, good luck!

You'll be ok with 16" on it. I have a GX as but mine is a 99 and i have 17's on mine. All that you'll need is to get some tires that will fit that rim and you'll be good to go

I just got 4 wheels from The Tire Rack, an online performance parts store. I paid $115 each for mine plus shipping / handling. They're great looking wheels and the people and service at the Tire Rack are excellent. They also have tire / wheel deals where they'll sell you a complete package. I did a lot of searching before I bought my wheels, and I highly recommend them.

The stock alloy wheels (5-115 bolt pattern) will fit your '00 model, but I would stay away from them. They're junk. I had to replace all of mine because the tires rubbed against the wheel rims and basically destroyed them along with two of the tires. In over twenty years in the tire industry, I've never seen anything like it on automotive wheels.

I got the Sport Edition Fox 5 wheels, but there are some other really good looking wheels there for around the same price. It was a tough decision.

when you bought yours, do you have to modify the bolt patern to put them on or what? thats why i just want to get the regular alloys cuz they will fit right on. what all needs to be done to get ones from tire rack? i was just on that site earlier and i found some cool ones i was gonna get, 17's to be exact..

That's a good thing I found about the Tire Rack. Because the Alero is GM and front wheel drive, it's hard to find aftermarket wheels that fit right. When you look for wheels on the Tire Rack they're only showing you the wheels that will fit your car. You're only looking at a fraction of the wheels they stock. Most websites show you their whole inventory, so you don't know whether they'll fit your car or not.

The wheels I bought bolted right on. I didn't need spacers or shims, but some other wheels might. They'll send you a set of chrome lug nuts with the wheels and I would suggest you get a set of locks. They sell a good brand and the price is no more than you'd pay anywhere else. My suggestion is to call 1-888-541-1777 and talk to Damon at ext. 643. He's not high pressure and he'll answer any questions you have. Leave a message if he's not available. He'll call you back.

ohh thats cool i didnt know that. i thought they show u all kinds of wheels that could go on ur car, but would need modifications. do they sell tires too? ill need some of those then also, damn..

They'll sell you the whole package if that's what you want....tires, wheels, lug nuts, locking lugs and they'll mount the tires on the wheels and balance them for you before they send them.

wow thats really awesome...so is it easy enough to just jack the car up and put them on in the driveway??

Sorry for the long delay in responding. Yeah, if you get the whole package, it would be that simple. Since I didn't get new tires at the same time I bought my wheels, I had to take them to a shop and pay to have my old tires mounted on the new wheels and balanced.

If it will make any difference in helping you decide, here's a pic of our '02 Olds Alero GL2 with 16" stock Olds Alloy wheels and Goodyear Eagle RSA P225/50-R16 tires. Came on it stock from the factory. Excellent handling and ride and helps it pull over .82Gs on a 200 ft skidpad. However, this combination is probably a lot more expensive than aftermarket.

Very similar to what was stock on my '99 gls....same size tires, but I'm running Michelin Pilot XGT4H tires....I'll try to get a pic of mine for comparison. I like the looks of the aftermarkets better than the stock, but that's just my opinion.

They are very similar with some differences when the GL2 was introduced around Fall 2001. The GLS had P225/50R16 Goodyear Eagle LS Radial Touring tires with polished wheels. The GL2 was equipped with P225/50R16 Goodyear Eagle RS-A Performance Radials on painted wheels. The RS-A tires were an option on the GLS for 2002.

:bigthumb:But I agree aftermarket wheels look a lot better. I've only got about 5K miles of tread left so will be looking at new 17" wheels with tire size around P225/40-45 R17. Too much variety out there with varying costs so its a hard decision to make.

Here's a pic of my Alero. Not the greatest quality and it just quit raining, but it does show the wheels. I would've liked to up the size to 17", but due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to get the tires and wheels together, so I had to stick with the 16's.

Nice ride! Wheels look sharp. I'm looking for 17" 5 spokes but without the split. Gonna start checking out EBay, TireRack and some local shops.
