it has to be able to be done. the guy at the glass shop told me you could shape it but it would be so expensive its rediculous. my question is if you bought a pane of lexan glass big enough could you lay it over the old glass and heat it up and shape it? lexan would take like 55 pounds off the back wouldnt it? also is it legal to put lexan in the place of the windsheld on a street driven car?

Lexan would save a good deal of weight. I know for Honda's a whole leaxan hatch window pane weighs about 15lbs. I don't think that its legal to put as a windshield but the hatch should be fine. As for molding it I think that would be very hard to heat just the lexan up and mold it.

No way you could heat it to make a shape w/o building an expensive mold maker.

To form the lexan you'd need: a mold in the shape of the glass you are replacing, a heated vacuum mold machine and lots of $$$. Also, lexan isn't going to remain very clear when it is bent around those compound curves. Lexan crazes and scratches very easily but would save you about 200 lbs if replacing the rear hatch glass with it.

I don't know why you guys are so hell bent for election to remove all this weight.

weight does not affect things nearly as much as people think. Hot rod proved this a few months ago...... (finally, that magazine did something useful)

I know theres a lexan hatch for 3rd gens. It costs a bit of money and your saving some weight, but its on the rear tires so I cant see it helping a whole lot.
I know people have complained about fitment problems and also moving around a bit in the wind because the glass is what gives the hatch its weight anyways.
