Hi! I am new here, I just picked up my 2003 yellow beetle GLS today, 12,000 miles......... I think that the A/C does not work though. When I press the A/C switch, should it light up?? Mine does not; the recirc button does, not the A/C switch. I am thinking that if the switch is broken, that might be why the A/C does not seem to be working? It was hard to tell today, it was about 60 degrees here. But it should come on stong, yes?
I am under warranty for a LONG time, (this car was sold in Feb 2004 originally as a leftover), so I am not TOO worried. I just need to return it to a VW dealer for service under the warranty........
Thanks to all of you! I am glad to read all about VWs on this forum, I had a yellow 1976 convertible back in the day. It is nice to be back in a bug after almost 20 years driving a minivan (4 kids) !

The switch may not have been plugged in.
Easy way to tell if the switch works is to have the engine running while warm and turn the fan to cold and speed to high and press the button. The engine should rev a little higher and rough untill the idle stabilizes.
If there isnt cold air after that then the ac system has a problem.
