Cruise Control Help

I'm having cruise control problems in my '98 sub. A bump will shut it off or sometimes even heavy shifting on a hill. I was thinking it was a wiring problem but a mechanic said the under hood component needed replacing and the part had to come from the factory for over $400.

Any suggestions?

check the adjustment on your brake light switch.

My parents have a 95 Sub and the cruise control module had gone bad a few years ago - it started as you described, then simply stopped working at all. They weren't willing to pay the $450 they were quoted.

When my Tahoe was in the shop we were borrowing it and replaced it. We found a used working module on eBay for about $50. It took my SO about an hour total time to replace.

Call around to junkyards if you don't feel comfortable on eBay - you'll likely be able to find one that's much cheaper.

A good shop's "expert" said that since the cruise on my '90 Suburban would not engage at all I needed a whole new module.

A couple of days later I was working under the hood and noticed that the linkage rod from the TBI throttle to the cruise diaphragm (big ball on the firewall next to distributor) had come off.

The metal ring/clip attached to the diaphragm had cracked. First couple of times I was able to bend the pieces together to hold the throttle rod, but it kept pulling out. A bent paper clip JB Welded to what's left of the clip holds for up to 5000 miles.

Dealer wants hundreds for the vacuum parts. Eventually I'll find a decnt used one at a pick-your-part junkyard!
