After you pull the engine, about 20 minutes. Trying to do a pan gasket while in the car is not recommended. To mary things in the way and hard to get to seals and replace the gasket without leaks when you finish. :2cents:

It is easy. You need to remove the two long bolts in the motor mounts. If you have an exhaust Y pipe you need to drop that. now raise the engine as far as you can. Usally when the dist hits the fire wall. PS remove cap and rotor first. Oh! do drain the oil and remove the filter.
Remove the pan bolts and insert a flat screw driver at one end of the pan and work all the way around. Usally the pan will drop by itself.
Try not to hit the oil pick up when dropping the pan. Buy the new one piece gasket from fel pro and use GM silicon sealer follow directions! The new gasket goes on dry for the most part sealer is used in the corners.
This gasket can be reused.

I've removed the stock oil pan on my 72 Chevelle without taking the motor out... a little cramped, but possible, and if you don't have an engine lift.. that's what you have to do... otherwise lifts can be found for about 100bucks.. use that 1piece gasket definitly, it's easier, and less chance of a leak. I personally use fram oil filters.
As far as time... 2 hours if it's your first time... assuming you don't raise the motor... slow & lifting engine 4hrs... pretty good around cars.. 30min w/o engine pull to 1hr pulling it up.Not including food and beverage breaks... :)
