starter or not?

after a new tranny install on my cousins 97 GS-T spyder(5spd), the car started just fine and made a trerrible rubbing noise that seemed to be almost a high pitch rubbing noise(very loud). also the starter smoked when we started it.... did i mess up his car or what? or is it somthing else?

im positve i wired every thing correctly too.....i also tightened the 2 starter bolts pretty tight too.....
