Cleaning Engines...

I need to clean my engine, and I know that pouring water on it can damage some components ( Distributer or other things). What is the best way to clean it yourself. I dont want to pay 75-100 to steam clean it at a Car wash. I saw a commercial bout that steam cleaner, and was wondering if it works (something like this or similiar)

Coat your cold engine with simple green. Don't let it sit on aluminum parts for too lone. Scrub stubborn parts with a brush, then hose it off with a garden hose. Don't concentrate water flow into the air cleaner if you have an open element. If you have trouble starting the car, chances are you've made the ignition wet. Either wait or spray the ignition components with WD40 or similar. My guess is you won't need it.

Don't be shy. Get in there and scrub.

"Gunk Engine Brite" will get your engine spotless. My uncle use to use it on his Grand Marquis and it got the engine nice and clean. WD40 will work good too.

yea gunk works great, if you have a open element intake cover that up with plastic, go to a local car wash spray your engine bay with the gunk and pressure wash it off. (i know its illegal to do that, and i know the water gets recycled so never wash your car there again hehe)

I used to do this and it did work great. Then I heard the high pressure water sometimes gets forced into the many electrical connector plugs on newer cars causing problems. Now I hesitate to do this. Are my concerns unfounded?

DUDE THIS IS A SIMPLE TASK FIRST JUST GO TO LOCAL CAR WASH USE THE ENGINE CLEANER THEY HAVE BUT FIRST WET THE ENTIRE CAR DOWN .THE CLEANER COULD HURT PAINT IF U LET IT DRY.LET CAR RUN WHILE CLEANING.
WHEN U ARE FINISHED ANY PREP WORK U WANT TO DO SHOULD BE NEXT PAINTING , OR JUST A TUNE UP.THEN GET A BOTTLE OF SON OF A GUN,MIX IT HALF WATER AND HALF S O G . THIS WILL GIVE A NICE LOOK,THE DELUTING PART IS SO IT WILL NOT COLLECT AS MUCH DUST AS NORMAL STRENTGH.

if u want it took like brand new...bug and tar remover is the best thing u can possibly use..trust me

Cold engine,Cover alternator, distributor,ox sensor,map sensor,plug snorkel.Wet engine,full strengh degreaser/engine cleaner,pressure wash engine bay with 15 degree tip using 3000 psi.Let degreaser sit min 20 minutes.Remove covers and start engine.Run ten minutes and you are good to go!If you wish you can dress parts of engine/paint.For very heavy build-up on block use a 0 degree tip.
