Tranny problems

The transmission in my 96 Silverado just let go . I bought it from a car lot 5 months ago, so don't know any of the back ground of the truck, but I do know that the tranny had been rebuilt once before (not sure when but it has 180,000 Kilometers or 110,000 miles now). Are these trannys junk? I thought the 700r4s where good units. I have one in a 91 Caprice that has over 300 K, and still going strong. Should I be looking at a transmission upgrade/ Is there a newer or older model that would swap in? Can they be beefed up?
Thanks for any help.

first of all you have a 4L60E in your 96, not a 700r4, and they are BOTH good units. they will take some abuse, but not nearly as much as their predicesors....TH350 and TH400. I would look into a good used one, or a Jasper rebuild.

Yep, a 96 will have a 4L60E from the factory. It's a good tranny but could be beefed up a bit. The TH series can take abuse, like previously stated. You can always get trannies like the 4L60E fixed up for a higher torque load capacity. Other models include the 4L80E, but that is usually for severe duty.

I personally dont like the 4L60E's. Just because it is a fact that at some point they will act up, and can not handle much power. A 4L80E will keep you happy or a built 4L60E, which ever is cheaper.
