RE XXX Question

So I've been thinkin about getting 2 XXX12's in the summer when i get some cash. Now a friend of a friend has 2 12" RE MT's. He's gonna sell them but he is having them reconed to be XXX's. He is selling them somewhere in the $200 range. My question is is it worth it to buy these reconed subs/will they be the same as the XXX? Any advantages/disadvantages to buying subs that are reconed?

So MT motors with XXX softparts?

Why would you do that? I don't get it...

yeah I don't get it either, the heart of the XXX IS its motor, without that it's just a weak MT.

an SE with XXX parts is cool (the whole seXXX thing), but I don't get putting XXX parts on an MT chassis... It would just be a slightly quieter SPL sub, right?

it would be an SPL sub with lower powerhandleing. wouldnt get as loud and couldnt take the power that MT coils can. i want an reXXX or an sxXXX or an reSX or an reSE or.... maybe RE needs to bring back the HC...lmao

You know absolutely nothing about the HC ;) None of those RE-- could exist because of coil size ;) duh!

As stated above, the MT uses an ENTIRELY different motor than the XXX...that's mainly what makes them different. They both DO however utilize 3" VC's. The MT have a SHIT TON of BL, no pole vent, and utilizes quad triple stiff spiders (SPL configuration), the MT motor also has an EXTREMELY tight gap.

So, in a word...NO...it would be stupid.

i had (2) 15" RE HC quad 1 ohm coil with dual spider. David sold me those and i kind of regret i sold them. I should have sold only one of them and keep the other as a coffee table. lol

HC's were a ported box good sq crazy low end sub. SX's are louder, but not as SQ oriented and FYI Beyond Audio Inhumans are HC's so if you ever hear either you've heard both.

Well, that same motors ;)

Different soft parts...yeilding similar but different performance...

The Inhumans were also more customizable ;) hahaha...if you guys new what I was talking about...lol

i remember the inhuman now! its been so long. talk about the debates in the dinosaur ages where everyone said HC=inhuman.

they do look the same without looking at the cone. lol. I have an REhuman!!

Heck, I could have glued a RE dust cap on my RF and I'd have a RE Fosgate? Heh, this is getting a little silly.

Anyone got an pictures of this antique HC/inhuman sub? I'm kinda curious what they look like.

From what I've heard(don't know if it's true) during the reconing process the MT motor is changed to the XXX one as well as the dust cap and labeling. Some stuff stays the same though like the spyder I think....

Completely and utterly incorrect...you really have no idea what re-coning is do you ?!?!

reconing is when you replace the surround, cone and dust cap (if necessary) to get a different type of sound right? I'm just guessing here, so yeah. Care to enlighten us n00bs NG?

Nope ;)

First, you must realize the motor on each individual line-up is usually the same from 10"-18" subwoofers. (i.e. the motor on the 10XXX is the EXACT same as the motor on the 18XXX, the motor on the 10MT is the same as the motor on the 18MT ;) )

Usually when a sub is reconed, it is reconed to the same size. So, If my 12MT Blows, it is reconed...meaning all the soft parts are replaced. The Cone/Surround(one part of assembly), the coil/spider/tinsels(coil is one part and spider/tinsels are the other part of this assembly), and the dustcap(covers up the hole in the cone where the coil is attatched and the tinsels are soldered to the coil leads). (In RE's case, they usually have re-cone's already made...like a one piece recone the "drops" in place...tho it is more "technical" than that...hehe). A sub can also be reconed to a different size, meaning you keep the same motor...get a new basket...and recone it to the matching basket size.

That's it, I can explain more...like the actual process...and even show some pics if need be. I'll be on later ;)

Man ng is harsh...of course I don't know the full details of reconing that's why I posted, I'm just going by what I've heard.

lol me and Noah have seen a lot of recones done to MT's (cough cough tottie jawnson) but yea if you reconed an mt to an xxx AND the motor (the most expensive part BY FAR) you would basically just be buying an xxx. RE wouldn't even do that since the only same part is the basket.

CBFryman

Noah, how much would it cost to get an XXX reconed to an 18? roung about i beleive just a recone is around $100. im assumeing like another 50 bucks or so for the basket.

Why don't you call RE and ask them?
Noah doesn't work there.

He he, he's actually admitting I know something ;) lol...

But yeah, it depends on WHO you talk to...and WHO you are ;) I'd imagine around that range CB...
