Transmission Shifting

Hello,

I have a 2000 Taurus Wagon with 6 cyl ffv.

About a year ago with the brake switch recall I had the speed sensor checked because at low speeds the car would not shift or stutter shift. The dealer checked the codes and said the sensor was bad. I agreed and had the sensor replaced along with the brake switch recall. At that time I also had the transmission fluids flushed and replaced. All was fine until.....

Now I am having shifting issues at high speeds. Same stutter shift just not as pronounced and only at highway speed. What I was wondering was; could this be corrected by just a fluid change or has something gone wrong in the transmission.

Thanks for anybody's input. I monitor this site all the time and get alot from the knowledge that is shared.

Well, I guess the first thing to do is check the level of your transmission fluid; you may have already done this. It should, of course, be full, and it should be bright red, not milky, and not dark brown; and it shouldn't have metal shavings in it, of course.

Barring that, there is probably not a whole lot you can do. If it's only been a year since you changed the fluid, and if you haven't driven, say, 20K-40K miles in the one year, it seems unlikely that a fluid change is going to help unless you have a more serious problem that has contaminated the fluid in the first place.

If it helps, I have an '02 gasoline Vulcan with only 37K on it, and sometimes I also get an odd-feeling "stutter" shift that isn't 100% smooth. Is it possible that he car always behaved this way but you just didn't really pay attention to it until recently? These things just seem to have their little idiosyncracies that aren't an indication that anything is wrong.

And, of course, 100K+ miles is a lot in 5 years, but your transmission may just be on its way out if you've driven it that much or more.

sfontain,

Thanks for your quick response.

I have checked the fluid level. But no checked the quality. ie if it has any shavings ect. It is also possible that the car has always shifted this way I have only 83K on the car got it with 61K. I'll check the fluid and hope for the best.

Thanks again for your insight. Kinda figured that if it's time for the tranny to go it's gonna go...

I have a 2000 ses with 95K......a few months ago I was getting that
stutter and attributed it to the Transmission.......I did a fluid and filter change and everything looked good on the pan and old filter...but the
"stutter" didn't go away......I had planed to replace plugs and Wires and finally got around to it.......After that the "stutter" went away...
