I remember reading someplace that Fram oil filters suck. Was that here? Why? I just put one on my maro, but intend to change it in less than 1000 miles b/c oil gets way dirty awfully quick.

What does everyone else use?

Thanks

That was me that said that. In highschool, I had to do a final project in auto mech. So I bought a fram, AC delco, motorcraft, purolator, and KN oil filter. Then I cut them apart and compared the filtration elements.

all of them have the same filter media so I had to go on how much filter material. here were the results

first place was puralator. With the most filter material and what I feel the best way it was placed in the filter

AC Delco and Motorcraft were pretty much even.

KN was next

and the last place was the fram. It had the least ammount of filter material

Does the amount of material inhibit the flow? Or does that have nothing to do with anything?

I'll switch to Puralator based on what you said, but does more material restrict oil flow???

only if the filter is pulgged up. filters become more effective at filtering debris as they get "full" so I would say yes it would if you let it get bad.

accually there is a check valve in your system. So in theroy, a filter could not restrict flow

Not only that....Fram filters have been known to fall apart.

Fall apart? Also how much does a Puralator cost? I jsut figured that the K&N would be good but it's at bottom of the food chain, seems like a wasted $14.

I just use ACDelco. Girlfriend gets them at cost, and they are as good or better than the K&N.

Well, I have never heard about fram filters falling apart, if they had a history like that I just don't think that they would be sold so widely. I guess in my experience everybody has their opinions on what products are good and certain ones they have had a problem with so now they will never buy again. I've used fram, purolator, delco, store brand they all do their job and I've never had a problem with any of them.

I use purolater, theyre liek 6-8 bucks

Is it helpful to change the oil filter between oil changes? Or is that a waste and not helpful in keeping the oil running clean longer?

waste, filters are accually designed to be a little dirty.. As a filter plugs up, the more effective it becomes.

That is why I never understang people that clean air filters ever 3,000 miles

Yeah, I know with K&N's they say that it's not worth it to clean them all the time because they actually work better when they have some dirt in them.

Don't go to autozone they suck, go to Advance they are way better parts stores and are usually cheaper too.

Autozone does have a bad rep, especially ones around my neighborhood. This guy there told me i should go to a different auto parts store like pep boys, cuz they practically support nothing but imports. i was looking for some msd wires at the time and he told me 'we support much for the camaro, but if you had a honda...' thats just f***** up.

I second that. and if they are not cheaper, they will price match.

Of course autoparts stores support ricer boys. They need to apeal to their major customers. We order the real stuff out of Jegs and Summit. Ricer boys go to auto parts stores to get the "quality APC stuff."

Eh well there are no advance's around me but autozone is better than strauss

AMEN!! Everytime i go into autozone (for replacement parts only) all you see when you go in his honda this acura that. Onetime, this kid went in and spent $100 in interior accesiores from APC, steering wheel cover, floor mats, seatcovers, 200hp stickers.

I think they all suck. No one in any of them know their ass from a hole in the ground.

I drove my maro to Pep Boys a few months ago and some dickwad asked me what year my "Charger" was... a 90 or 91. After I told him it was a 70 Camaro, and that I needed a starter he asked me what engine, I told him 454, he types on his computer for a minute... "they all came with the same starter." I said Chevy never made a Camaro with a 454, least of all a 70-73. He goes "yes they did, it's right here in my computer. They're $65"

I know I sure as hell am not putting no $65 starter in my maro. Especially when some moron who can't even dress himself propely can't even distinguish a Camaro from a Charger tells me which one I need.

Dude, he called it a charger, that is bad. These guys don't know anything. They try and act but it don't play. 'they all came with the same starter' LOL!! Thats means we share the same starter and i gotta 305!

Yea if you could ever find a part house that has cut several filter open you would see why Fram filter are not what you think. I have seen alot of part houses that have done this to show people the qualitiy of filters.

If I need to buy only oil and filters, I usually just go to Wal-mart.. they are very cheap with that kind of stuff. As far as filter, I generally use a Puralator or Wix brand.. never had a complaint out of either one of them.

PS Earl. What mods do you have done to the motor in your car? How does it run? Im just curious.

autozone is the only auto parts store in the neighborhood, the closes advance auto parts near me is several miles in another city. Ever heard of Lappen's Auto? They're pretty cool.
