Reinstalling Windows problem

Okay IT guys, maybe one of you folks can guide me.

Is there a way to force Windows XP to do an upgrade instead of a new install. Reason I ask is because one of my systems was acting strange so I decided to reinstall windows. But when I insert the CD and boot up it refuses to do an upgrade install, it wants to do a new install which would erase the current Windows and all of my settings and programs.

any suggestions?

I presume you already have win XP, in that case you cannot do an upgrade, however it should allow you when you boot off the XP cd you install over the old version. Or in your case you might want to try the repair feature that should pretty much reinstall all your system files. If you do either don't forget to reinstall all the security updates.

That being said a proper fresh install of windows is always better.

I guess it won't kill me to do a fresh install come to think about it. Not much on this pc so it won't be that much of a hazzle to re-install everything. I did try the boot up to cd and install option but it refuses to do the upgrade option only a new install. So I'll just bite the bullet and do a fresh. I just though I could save an hour not having to do the other programs.

Thanks,

if you want to keep your files do a repair but some problems will still persist. Just do a fresh install.

before you do a fresh install download a free firewall service and burn it to a cd and do not connect to the internet until you have installed a firewall. Then go and run Win update.
