Just a radio question

I've heard that the factory stereos in the 2001 Pontiac grand am, often blow the rear speakers. I started checking this problem when I realized mine were blown too.
Anyway. The factory speakers are 8 ohms. Is it possible to replace the factory "8 ohm" speakers, with "4 ohm" speakers?

Hey Eagle, well, it depends on what type of stereo you are using. Most cars run on 4 ohm speakes because they have more resistance one them which give them better sound. You should be fine running on 4 ohm speakers but you should get factory ones by GM. That might be the problem why they would blow in the first place. But to answer your problem, if you do happen to go with 4 ohm speakers, make sure to go GM speakres. if you would like to, i know that they have 6ohm speakers, also, check your owners manual if i does happen to tell you what your stereo puts out for resistance (ohms)...if you need more help, feel free to ask.

ok, um...lets see, well i dont seriously think it would hurt to use a stereo that has more ohms than the speakers (just so you know the higher ohms there are the less resistance there is). so if you were using a radio with 8 ohms and speakers with 4 ohms, it shouldnt hurt, never has for me with amps and receivers and stuff. but again to be safe, try to get gm factory speakers that are 8ohms if not, well, you will just have to see but if it makes u feel better, i have never had a problem with stereos that pump 8 ohms but i know its a little harder on them. Just try to get gm speakers.

Just so you know ohms is the measure of resistance, more ohms = more resistance and vice-versa. You can use 4 ohm speakers on a radio made for 8 ohm speakers but you run the risk of frying the amp inside the radio from the increased current when you turn the radio up loud.

haha, thanks for correcting me. thats right. That is true, You do run a risk at doing that, but if you had to buy new speakers becuase you turned the stereo up loud, than why would you do it again?...thats the point i was trying to make.

I think I'll play it safe, and pick up a set of 8 ohm, factory speakers. Thanks for your help.
