I have just dropped a 383 stroker into my 370,000-mile '90 Suburban. I'm the original owner and the original 350 got me that far. With seven vehicles (four Chevys and three BMWs) I spend a lot of time on routine maintenance. Most of my vehicles are between 200,000 and 400,000 miles, so as you can imagine I don't mind spending serious money on the best products I can find for preventive maintenance.

I've heard good things about Amsoil products from proplw who are users, not dealers. Amazing things like a dually truck going from 11 to 15mpg.

If you Yahoo or Google "Amsoil" you will get thousands of hits. Lots of dealer sites, as it is a multi-level marketing organization.

They have a 0-30W (that's right) oil that they claim can go up to 35,000 miles between changes, dual bypass filter set-ups as used on diesel trucks, air filters that far outperform K & N, etc.

In five decades of driving and wrenching, I've settled on Castrol Syntec for my engines, Redline D4 ATF for automatics, Torco for rear ends, Mobil 1 grease for chassis, etc. but I'm always on the lookout for something better. The Amsoil testimonials all sound great, but a bit too good to be true. Any experiences good or bad you can tell us about, Chevy people?

You know the saying, "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is." I've seen a few people advertising this product but never looked into it because I'm broke and I figured a product that claims to be better than Mobil 1 has to cost more than Mobil 1 so..... I'll stick to good ol' Castrol GTX. Besides, with all the time you have spent turnin' wrenches, would you REALLY want to keep the same oil in your motor for 35,000 miles?? What it sounds like to me is a product for the average American who only thinks of changing their oil maybe 2 or 3 times the entire time they own it, which is usually about 35000 to 45000 miles. Sooo....."here is a new and improved way to take peoples money because they will only have to change their oil one time, thats right ONE TIME the entire time they own their vehicle. Never worry about going over on an oil change again, just let the 2nd (or next) owner deal with all the damage you have done when you you use AMSOIL!!!"

BUYER BEWARE???

Well, I use AMSOIL in my wife's car (neon) and mine (taurus). I run Valvoline Maxlife synthetic in my chevy 1500 184Kmi ( I want to keep the seals sealed). I think it is a good product. My wifes car is a Neon and they are notorious for lifter noise on startup. I was using a synthetic blend before and put in AMSOIL and the noise has gone away. I have not noticed a big increase in mileage ( 1mpg at the most), but her engine is slightly smoother ( which is good for a neon). They state with the oil i bought to change every 25kmi or 1 year, and the AMSOIL filter every 6mo. or 12,500 mi. I chage the filter every 6 mo because I dont reach the mileage, same w/ the oil. Their not the only one anymore either. Mobil has started with their 5kmi, 7500mi, and 15kmi service oils. There are a few others that i cant think of at the time. If in doubt, look at the data sheets on the oil, and/or do an oil analysis.

I have run amsoil for 18 years. In my Trucks, cars and Race cars. I would put any other oil in a vehicle that I wanted to keep. The only draw back that I have had with Amsoil is if you have a leaky gasket it will find the leak. But, if you keep up your regular maintence like you should you won't have any problems with amsoil products.
Example: Look at the Dixie Chopper comercial mowers, the warranty is void if you run anything but Amsoil products, they claim that the motor and drives won't withstand any oil but the amsoil, since they have such a high heat rating.

True story...I live a few miles from a refinery. My son bought a honda from a guy thats a technicission for the refinery (not Amsoil). He became a Amsoil dealer just to get the products for himself.

He said he tested Amsoil after being used for 3000 mi and it was still cleaner than anything you could buy off the shelf.

Didn't say anything about the mileage. Must be hell-of-a filter.

The Honda had 170k and looked like it just came off the showroom floor.

I leaned over and wispered to my son "this is the kind of person to buy a used car from".

He put 100k on it, and sold it to a friend when He bought his Toyota Tacoma new.

Honda still running like a sewing machine.

A buddy of mine owns an auto parts store where I live. He recommended Amsoil in my k1500. Within 1000mi it developed a loud tick at startup that would last untill it reached operating temp. I changed back to what I had been using ( quakerstate 4*4 blend ) and the ticking went away. That is the first and last time I will try Amsoil.
