I just bought a used AC compressor for my 1996 2.2L Cavalier because mine was shorted out and kept blowing fuses. Will I be able to plug the compressor in and see if it works/does not blow fuses before I do all he coolant connections or install it? In other words...can I just plug the plug into the compressor, turn the AC on, and see if the compressor works. Thanks for helping a novice.

No you can not. You will at least have to install it on the car. But you do not have to fill the system up.

I was also told I would not need to install it if I just wanted to see if it would blow the fuse or not. Why would I need to install it on the car? Thanks

Well maybe not then but i do know this. A/C compressors have a eletrical clutch in them so i would think you would a least want to see if it worked. And it needs to be spinning to make sure it works right.
