302 swap out problems

I am by no means a gear head, but I can follow simple directions and so far they are getting me no-where. I completly destroyed my old engine in my 91 F-150, threw two rods completly though the block and oil pan. A friend of mine sold me a mustang 302 block in good condition that looked identical to my old block. I had it bored .040 over changed all the bearings and am using the mustang crank and cam. There were two differences between engine blocks... the mustang engine had a roller cam and no hole in the back of the block for my knock sensor. I drilled the hole and installed my knock sensor... so I should be good to go right? Does not seem like it! I have the engine installed in the truck and it does not seem to be timing right. I am not following any normal procedures for the truck, just dropping the distributor down on TDC of #1 and cranking her over. It seems to idle (somewhat) and I can rev the engine up (in park) but as soon as I put it in gear, it sputters and tries to die even with the gas to the floor. It will not even move on the drive way in gear.
I have tried every firing order ford has ever come up with and I have two discrepencies of which plug on the cap to use for #1 cylinder. none of my changes seems to make a difference. I guess my questions are "the steel gear required for use on the distributor for roller cams is just for wear not timing right?" and is there something I am not doing with the electronics of the truck to make this computer or EEC clear codes? IE dissconnect something while I time it or put it in drive then reverse then hold my tounge to the side while spilling salt over my shoulder?. This engine will run with a 351 firing order, 302 standard firing order, some weird plug hook up order to the EEC distributor cap I found in a Hanes manual (that does not follow a firing order for spark plug wire order) I can get the damn thing to run, but it always seems to be timed wrong. I am sure that the cam/crank were timed properly (dot to dot). This will be my 5th or 6th engine re-build from Ford to Chevy and even an import in the mix, and I am lost this time. I am really frustrated and in need of some technical expert advice. Dan.

the 302 in your truck fires 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 the mustang motor will fire 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 also the injectors fire 4 at a time you may have to rewire a few of them for the right cylinder

I guess through trial and error I was bound to stumble upon the answer. You are correct on the firing order... I had to change the order to the 351 / high output 302 order. I also put in a mustang distributor that had the steel cam gear (experts everywhere say I haaaad to) The key I was missing was the spout (spark out) deal near the distributor, I did not have anything but a 302 rebuild book.... on the way home from work I stopped by the parts house and picked up one of the chiltons manuals for said truck and followed the instructions to a tee. Keeping the firing order for the mustang, but using the rest of the instructions for the truck worked its magic. Test drive a-ok. thanks mustang mike.
